Cooling and thermal derating

Check the warranty before you accept a quote
The single most useful thing an ABB owner can do is establish where the unit actually stands before agreeing to anything. FIMER publishes an online check that works from the inverter’s serial number, and it took on ABB’s existing warranty obligations when it acquired the business. Some ABB units sold in Australia carried ten-year replacement terms. We have seen owners quoted for a full replacement on a unit that still had a claim available, simply because the badge on the front said ABB and the assumption was that ABB had left. Worth thirty seconds and a serial number.
Questions
ABB stopped making solar inverters. Am I stranded?
No. FIMER acquired the business in 2020 and committed to honouring existing ABB warranties, with an Australian support operation and an online serial-number warranty check. Being told an ABB unit is unsupported is worth verifying rather than accepting.
Can ABB inverters still be repaired, or only replaced?
Both, depending on the fault and the model. Fans, connections, comms boards and DC-side problems are routinely repairable. A failed power stage on an older unit usually is not worth it. The test result decides, not the badge.
What is the difference between my ABB inverter and a FIMER one?
Largely the name. The product line ran Power-One, then ABB, then FIMER, with continuity in the underlying range. That is why FIMER supports ABB units.
Does an ABB inverter need different parts to a FIMER one?
For the overlapping model families, largely no, which is the practical benefit of the business transferring intact rather than being wound up. The UNO and PVS ranges continued under FIMER, so a unit badged ABB sits in a supported product line rather than an abandoned one. Older Power-One era hardware is the exception, and there parts availability is the limiting factor rather than the badge.
