Solar PV Systems

Perhaps you’ve heard all about the benefits solar power provides, but you’re still not sure if it’s for you? More than one million Australian homes now have solar power because of the benefits it delivers – lower electricity bills, a reduced carbon footprint and increased property value, to name just a few.

How Does Solar Power Work?

GRID-CONNECTED SOLAR PV SYSTEMS

Solar power systems are actually very easy to understand. Roof-mounted solar panels capture sunlight and convert it into DC electricity which is then converted into 240V AC electricity by the inverter for your house to use. Your home appliances and electric devices use the power from the solar power system and only draw grid electricity when more power is required. Any excess power is fed back into the grid, and if you’re eligible, the energy provider will pay you for the excess.

GRID-CONNECT WITH BATTERY BACKUP SOLAR PV SYSTEMS

Now that battery storage has arrived, many homeowners are having battery backup systems installed. These systems feature a battery inverter and battery bank, and they’re similar to the standard grid-connected solar PV systems with one important difference – they enable you to store the excess power produced during the day for use at night. Advanced models are even able to supply electricity when grid outages occur.

How Will Solar Power Save Me Money?

It’s simple. As your system produces power for your home to use, you don’t need to purchase as much from your energy provider. What’s more, if you’re selling them the excess power produced, you’re also receiving credit which further offsets how much you pay.

For example, if your devices consume 4kW and you produce 2kW, you’re consuming 2kW instead of 4kW, which means you’re paying half as much as you ordinarily would for that hour. However, if you produce 4kW and only use 2kW, you would feed 2kW back to the grid without purchasing any power at all, and perhaps even receive credit for the excess.

How to Select the Right System

Start by checking your power bill to evaluate your daily power consumption, which is shown in units (kWh). You then need to think about when you use power and ensure that your daytime power consumption is covered as a minimum.

4.6kWh per day is produced on average by every kW of solar power, but due to factors such as location, roof orientation and shading, this varies. If you average 20kWh daytime consumption you’d need a 5kW system, or a 3kW system if your daytime consumption was 12kWh.
