SMA inverters

SMA Inverter Repairs Perth

SMA is one of the longest-established inverter manufacturers on Perth roofs. The Sunny Boy family has been sold here across many generations, which means a Perth electrician sees everything from units barely a year old to string inverters that have been converting DC since well before the WA rooftop boom. Both ends of that range fail differently, and the fix is rarely the same.

Common SMA inverter faults in Perth

Isolation and residual current faults

The most common SMA callout. The inverter reports an insulation resistance problem and stops exporting. It is usually moisture in a DC connector or a chafed string cable rather than the inverter itself, which is why replacing the unit without testing the array first is money wasted.

Grid faults and afternoon dropouts

The unit disconnects when grid voltage drifts outside the limits set under AS 4777. In parts of Perth with long feeders and heavy midday export this happens most on clear, hot afternoons. It is frequently a network or settings question rather than a faulty inverter.

Fan noise and thermal derating

Older Sunny Boy units run cooling fans that collect dust and bearing wear. A unit that has become audible from inside the house is usually also derating, so you are losing output on exactly the days it should be producing most.

Display and communication failures

A blank screen or a monitoring link that has stopped reporting is not the same as a dead inverter. The DC and AC side often test fine, and the fault sits in the display board or the comms module.

What we do

SMA still trades and is supported in Australia, so a unit inside its warranty term has a genuine manufacturer path. We diagnose the fault, document it, and where the unit qualifies we handle the liaison so you are not the one chasing it. Where the inverter is out of term or beyond economic repair, we quote a like-for-like replacement sized to the array you already have, rather than treating a dead inverter as an excuse to sell you a new system.

Questions

Is a Riso or isolation fault on my SMA inverter serious?

It means the system has detected leakage between the DC side and earth, and the inverter has stopped for safety. It is doing what it should. The cause is usually moisture ingress at a connector or damaged cable insulation on the roof, so it needs someone to test the strings, not just reset the inverter. Repeatedly clearing the fault without finding the cause is unsafe.

My Sunny Boy has gone quiet and the screen is blank. Is it dead?

Not necessarily. A blank display can be a failed display board on an inverter that is otherwise still converting, and monitoring dropouts are often the comms module. We test the DC and AC sides before condemning the unit, because those two faults are far cheaper to resolve than a replacement.

Can you still get parts for an older SMA inverter?

It depends on the generation. Recent Sunny Boy models are well supported. For much older units, parts availability is the deciding factor, and at that age a replacement is often the better value even where a repair is technically possible. We will tell you which case you are in before you spend anything.

Do I have to use the original installer for warranty work?

No. Warranty sits with the manufacturer, not the installer, and many Perth systems were installed by companies that no longer trade. We can assess the unit and, where it is in term, support the claim.
