FAQs

Common questions about PV systems

Solar Repairs technician servicing rooftop solar panels
How do I know if a panel has failed rather than the inverter?

You usually cannot tell from the app. A failed panel and a failed string look similar in monitoring, because both show as reduced output. A PV test measures each string against its expected figure and checks isolation resistance, which separates a panel fault from an inverter or wiring fault before anyone starts replacing parts.

Can you replace a single panel on an older array?

Often yes. The replacement has to be electrically compatible with the string rather than identical, and on older arrays the original model is usually long discontinued. Where a close match cannot be found, reconfiguring the string is sometimes the better answer than replacing the whole array.

My system is ten years old. Is it worth repairing?

Panels routinely outlast their inverter, so a ten-year-old array is often sound with a tired inverter in front of it. The test result tells you which. Replacing an inverter on a healthy array costs a fraction of a new system.

Do you work on systems installed by companies that have closed?

Most of our work is exactly that. You do not need the original installer or the original paperwork, though it helps if you still have it.

How does a grid-connected solar PV system actually work?

Roof panels capture sunlight and produce DC electricity. The inverter converts it to 240V AC for the house to use, and anything the house does not use is exported to the grid. Everything passes through the inverter, which is why an inverter fault stops the whole system rather than part of it, and why it is the first thing we test.

How does a system with battery backup differ?

A battery system adds a battery inverter and a battery bank, so surplus daytime generation is stored instead of exported and used after dark. Some models also keep essential circuits running through a grid outage. More components means more that can fail, and a battery that appears dead is often a gateway or communications fault rather than the cells.
