Published 2026 guides put a replacement string inverter at roughly $1,000 to $3,000, depending on its size and brand. Hybrid inverters, which can also run a battery, start at around $3,000 and go up from there. 1KOMMA5° puts the typical replacement at about $3,000 including installation, and says the price is much the same whether the system is 2 kW or 5 kW.
Before you pay for a new one, make sure the old one is actually finished. A lot of “dead” inverters turn out to be a tripped switch, a failed isolator or a Wi-Fi problem.

What’s in the price
The inverter. Premium brands cost more up front but usually come with longer warranties, better monitoring and local support. On a system you plan to keep for another decade, that support matters more than the first price.
The labour. Removing the old unit, mounting the new one, connecting the DC and AC sides, commissioning it, and setting up the monitoring app.
Compliance. On the South West Interconnected System, new and upgraded solar and battery systems installed from 1 May 2026 have to meet Western Power’s new minimum technical standards. If the replacement changes your system’s size or type, such as moving to a hybrid inverter, expect paperwork with Synergy and Western Power as well. Your installer should tell you exactly what your job needs.
What turns up on the day. Weathered DC isolators, undersized cabling or a full switchboard can add to the job. We’ll price these before starting, not after.
Size matters less than you’d think
Much of the cost is labour and compliance, which are about the same for a 3 kW system as a 5 kW one. That’s why a small, old system can cost nearly as much to re-inverter as a bigger one, and why it’s worth asking whether the whole system is due for an upgrade.
Replace the inverter, or upgrade the system?
A like-for-like replacement makes sense when your panels are healthy and the system still suits how much power you use.
A hybrid inverter makes sense if a battery is on your list. Fitting one now saves paying for a second inverter change later. Under the WA Residential Battery Scheme, the no-interest loan of up to $10,000 can also cover an inverter, as long as it’s installed with a battery. See our WA battery rebate guide.
A full upgrade makes sense for many of the 1.5 kW to 3 kW systems installed in Perth between 2010 and 2012. New panels attract federal small-scale technology certificates, which cut the price of a new system. An inverter on its own doesn’t.
Check the warranty before you pay
Most inverters come with a five to ten year warranty, and many have extensions. If yours is still covered, the manufacturer is responsible for the unit even if your installer has gone out of business. We can check the warranty status and lodge the claim for you.
The harder case is an orphaned system, where the installer or the manufacturer has gone. 1KOMMA5° cites an estimate that about one in three Australian solar systems is in that position. There’s no warranty to fall back on, which is when a straight quote for a repair or a replacement matters most.
How to avoid overpaying
- Get a diagnosis first, so you only replace an inverter that’s actually failed
- Ask for an itemised quote that separates the inverter, the labour and any extras
- Check the new inverter suits your existing panels, so you’re not forced into replacing those as well
- Check it’s on the Clean Energy Council’s approved inverter list, which grid-connected inverters need to be on
- If a battery is likely within a few years, get a price for a hybrid as well as a like-for-like unit
