Symptoms
Is it the inverter?
When a solar system stops working, the inverter is usually the reason. It’s the box on the wall that turns the DC power from your panels into AC power for the house, it works hard through a Perth summer, and it’s the part most likely to fail before the panels do.
We’ve been diagnosing and repairing inverters across Perth since 1997, from Yanchep to Augusta. That includes brands whose manufacturer has left Australia and systems whose installer is no longer trading. Call 1300 555 274 and you’ll talk to a technician, not a salesperson.
| What you’re seeing | What it usually means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Blank screen, no lights, on a sunny day | The inverter isn’t getting power from the panels, has an internal power fault, or a switch has tripped | Check the solar supply main switch in your switchboard. If it has tripped and trips again after one reset, leave it off and call us |
| Red light or a fault code | Something is outside its limits, and the code tells us where to start | Photograph the display and the event log in your app. Don’t clear it |
| “Earth fault”, “isolation fault” or “Riso” | The insulation on the DC side has broken down, often from water in a rooftop isolator or damaged cable. It tends to show up after rain or early in the morning | Don’t touch the DC isolators. Book a diagnosis |
| Shuts down around midday and restarts later | Usually the grid voltage at your house is too high, so the inverter disconnects, as the Australian standard requires | Check the event log for overvoltage codes and tell us what you find |
| Producing less than it used to | Dirty or shaded panels, a failed optimiser or microinverter, or the inverter cutting back because it’s too hot | Compare your app’s daily totals with the same month last year |
| Monitoring offline but the inverter is running | Almost always Wi-Fi: a new router, a changed password or a failed dongle | Reconnect the inverter to your Wi-Fi first. It’s rarely a hardware fault |
| Burning smell, buzzing, scorch marks or melted plugs | A connection is overheating | Keep people away. If you can do it safely, follow the shutdown procedure on the label near your inverter or switchboard, then call us |
Safety first
What you can safely check yourself
Look at the display, photograph anything unusual, and check the switchboard. That’s where the safe checks end.
Don’t open the inverter, don’t operate the rooftop DC isolators, and don’t keep resetting a switch that trips. The DC side of a solar system stays live whenever the sun is on the panels, even with the mains switched off, and it can hold enough voltage to kill.
Diagnosis
How we find the fault
We test before we quote. A diagnosis usually covers:
- reading the inverter’s event log and fault history
- measuring each string’s DC voltage and insulation resistance, which finds most earth faults
- checking the AC voltage at the inverter while it’s producing, to confirm or rule out voltage rise
- inspecting the DC isolators and plug connectors for water, heat damage and corrosion
- checking the cooling fans and heatsink, which matters on a 40-degree afternoon
Repair or replace
Repair or replace?
If the inverter is still under warranty, we work out whether the fault is covered and deal with the manufacturer for you where we can. You shouldn’t pay for a fault the manufacturer is responsible for.
Out of warranty, plenty of faults are worth repairing: cooling fans, some capacitor failures, communication boards and firmware, plus the wiring and isolator faults that sit outside the inverter altogether. When the main power electronics fail on an inverter that’s ten or more years old, or the brand no longer supports it, replacement is usually the better use of your money. We’ll tell you which case you’re in before you commit to anything.
If replacement is on the table, our inverter replacement cost guide shows what Perth households typically pay.
Orphaned systems
Installer gone, or brand gone?
A lot of Perth systems from the 2010 to 2012 boom run inverters from brands that have since left Australia or stopped trading: Aerosharp, Samil Power, JFY, Zeversolar, Aurora and Power-One among them.
Where a brand was taken over, there’s sometimes still a warranty path. ABB’s solar inverter line went to FIMER in 2020, for example, and FIMER honours existing ABB warranties. Where a company simply closed, there isn’t one. We work out which situation you’re in first, then quote either a repair or a replacement sized to your existing panels, so you’re not paying to redo the whole system.
Voltage rise
Why inverters shut down on sunny days
To send power into the grid, your inverter has to run at a slightly higher voltage than the street supply. If the voltage at your house is already high, which happens on streets with a lot of solar around midday, the inverter hits its upper limit. The Australian standard it’s built to requires it to cut back or disconnect at that point. When the voltage drops, it reconnects, and the cycle repeats through the best part of the day.
The fix depends on where the problem sits. Sometimes the cable between the inverter and the switchboard is too small for the system, which we can fix. Sometimes it’s the street supply, and that’s a matter for Western Power. Our measurements give you the evidence to ask them to investigate.
Brands
Brands we repair every week
Fronius, SMA, Sungrow, GoodWe, Growatt, SolaX, Solis, Sofar, Delta, FIMER and ABB, Huawei, Latronics, SolarEdge, Enphase, Alpha ESS, Redback, Tesla Powerwall and Gateway, Selectronic and Sigenergy, plus the legacy brands above. See the full list of inverters we service.
Brand names belong to their owners and are used only to identify the equipment we work on. Solar Repairs is an independent repair and servicing business, not an authorised agent or service centre for any manufacturer unless we say so. We’re a Sigenergy partner.
Pricing
What it costs
We quote after we’ve found the fault, so you know the price before any work starts. When you call, we’ll tell you the diagnosis fee and how soon we can get to you. For a sense of replacement prices, see the cost guide.

FAQs
Common questions
How long do solar inverters last?
Most last 10 to 15 years, and better-made units can reach 20. Heat is what shortens their life, so an inverter mounted in full afternoon sun on a west-facing wall tends to fail sooner.
Can you repair an inverter if my installer has gone out of business?
Yes. A lot of our work is on systems whose installer is no longer trading. We check whether any manufacturer warranty still applies, then quote a repair or a replacement.
Why does my inverter keep shutting down in the middle of the day?
Usually because the grid voltage at your house is too high, so the inverter disconnects to stay within the Australian standard. It restarts when the voltage drops. We measure it to find out whether the cause is your wiring or the street.
Is it safe to reset my inverter?
You can reset the solar supply main switch in your switchboard once. If it trips again, leave it off and call us. Don’t open the inverter or operate the rooftop DC isolators, which stay live while the sun is up.
My monitoring app says the inverter is offline. Is it broken?
Probably not. If the inverter’s display shows it producing, the fault is usually the Wi-Fi connection: a new router, a changed password or a failed dongle. Reconnect it first before booking a repair.
